the boulders

meet the boulders. a family of rocks, sharp and soft who can't move much but they look out for each other, protecting themselves and their buds. it all started with inktober... an ink drawing a day for the month of october. an old bud started it back at bluesky and i've always wanted to partake, but an ink drawing a day seemed fanciful (to me). i finally committed to doing it last month and while abstract at first, the drawings slowly turned into these guys and gals. (below are some favorites. not all of the drawings made this post)

APE 2013!

I'll be in attendance selling my new book guillermo guacamole, a zine about the little things in life that make it swell and a few prints of some characters that people seemed to enjoy. Timothy J Lamb will be sitting next to me too! We'll be sharing table #763. What a way to spend your day :)

below are some detail images from both the book and the zine...

'the escapist' from kavalier & clay fame

book 2 in the works!

for those of you who follow me on instagram you might recognize the green lettering below... i present to you the cover of my second book, 'guillermo guacamole' (along with a few pages inside).

(gwaka-mole) is an avocado based sauce that originated in mexico. traditional in mexican cuisine it's also very much become part of our american cuisine... like me. mashing up buttery avocados, tomatoes, cilantro, lemons or limes... like my book... a mashing of 'ingredients' or sketches, observations, random ideas and such. still not as good as guacamole though :)

video game land

Just wrapped on a video game I was working on for the past year or so and wanted to share some of the character designs I contributed. While the direction of the game is ultimately going another route I'm grateful for the opportunity and I really enjoyed designing some of these guys :)

The Astonishing Anatomy of Ronald Searle

Matt Jones is steering the ship on a great cause and has asked some talented folks to help land a retrospective of Ronald Searle's work here in San Francisco! Searle In America would be the first of it's kind on the west coast. Below is my contribution and take on Searle's 'Morbid Anatomy' series... and a humble attempt at the pen and ink ninja grand master himself. I had a lot of fun working on this and am thankful to play a small role. I heart Ronald Searle and so does Matt. He runs a tribute blog with boat loads of treasure... enjoy :)

Beth - The imaginary friend who takes care of business :)

I was asked by an old blue sky bud (joseph lee) to join in on this great show taking place in April at 826LA, a non-profit that tutors kids and helps them write. It's going to be wonderful... I'll keep you posted on dates! These pieces will be on sale and proceeds will go to 826 and their kids. Below is part of the story written by one of the many talented kids there :)

My imaginary friend has light brown hair. She has brown eyes.
Today she is wearing a yellow sweater.
And she is wearing a black shirt and red shoes.
And she is wearing lipstick.

My imaginary friend always beats me at hide and go seek.

I met Beth at the park. It all started when I was playing in the swing.
Until two bullies pushed me and got me hurt. Until an adult named Beth helped me.
And she hit the two bullies. They got scared of her.
And at the end Beth and I were best friends forever.
